GIF is limited to 256 colors, making it poorly suited for photographs or graphics with smooth gradients. PNG is a lossless format that supports millions of colors and full alpha transparency. Converting your GIFs to PNG removes the color-count ceiling and preserves every pixel exactly.
Drag one GIF or an entire folder of GIFs onto Convertessa. Your files stay on your Mac — nothing is uploaded to any server.
Pick PNG from the output format list. Convertessa will produce a lossless PNG for each GIF, preserving resolution and transparency.
Click Convert. PNG files appear alongside the originals, with EXIF and embedded metadata stripped from each image.
Images, audio, video, documents, archives and eBooks — all converted natively, right on your Mac.

New formats, new features, and fixes — every release, on the record.
Yes. PNG supports full alpha transparency, so any transparent areas in your GIF are carried over exactly into the output PNG.
Convertessa extracts the first frame of an animated GIF and saves it as a static PNG. PNG does not support animation, so only the opening frame is written.
PNG removes the 256-color palette constraint imposed by GIF. If the original GIF was downsampled from a full-color source, the PNG will not recover lost detail — but no further quality is lost in the conversion, and future edits start from a lossless baseline.
