What 3GP-to-AU conversion does

3GP is a mobile container that bundles audio and video into a single file. Converting to AU extracts the audio stream and writes it as a Sun/NeXT AU file—a format standard in Unix audio pipelines and legacy workstations. The entire process runs locally on your Mac; your files are never uploaded anywhere.

Convertessa is a native macOS app that converts your files between formats — images, audio, video, documents, archives and eBooks — entirely on your Mac. Drop a file in, choose an output, and it’s done. No uploads, no account, no subscription.
Convertessa is an orchestrator. Under the hood it relies on best-in-class open-source engines — FFmpeg for audio & video, Pandoc for documents, libvips for images, LibreOffice for office formats, and Calibre for eBooks. It installs them for you with a click, then calls the right tool, or chain of tools, in the right order for whatever you’re converting. You get one clean native interface instead of a tangle of command-line flags. These binaries aren’t bundled with the app and are never installed without your approval — Convertessa simply calls them in a terminal session on your behalf.

AU (.au) is a simple audio container developed by Sun Microsystems. It stores raw or lightly encoded audio with a minimal header, making it a reliable interchange format for Unix/Linux audio toolchains and legacy workstations.

No. AU is audio-only. Convertessa extracts the audio stream from the 3GP container and writes it to an AU file; the video track is not carried over.

Yes. Drop a folder onto Convertessa and every 3GP file inside is converted to AU in one batch. From the command line, run convertessa folder/ --to au.
